Eggcruciating maths

Large, larger, largest. Some comparisons of honey bee egg sizes relevant to queen rearing. All other things being equal, the largest eggs are not laid in queen cups.

These are my final scribblings on egg size until I get a chance to do some practical beekeeping this year. They extend earlier posts on the maternal effect in honey bees, and the recent demonstration that the size of worker eggs laid by the queen is inversely related to the size of the colony.

They don't justify a full post — hence the BeeMusings format — but they could (or should?) be something you consider when preparing for the season ahead.
